Mosaic Madness Patterns

“Mosaic Madness and the science of patterns; it’s a numbers game.”

One of the reasons Mosaic Madness is so easy to work with; it is all about creating patterns! Even if you have not studied art: you have been surrounded by patterns whether you are consciously aware of them or not! Nature is full of patterns. If you have trouble in your designs, just go outside and study nature for awhile. You will find plenty of patterns to duplicate in your artwork! Snowflakes have patterns, leaves have patterns, hills have patterns, etc. Have you ever looked at a fern? While some of these patterns may be challenging to recreate in our artwork; mathematics is often referred to as the science of pattern. In composition there are several rules based on mathematics. One of them is the Rule of Odds. Wikipedia defines the rule:

The “rule of odds” states that by framing the object of interest with an even number of surrounding objects, it becomes more comforting to the eye, thus creates a feeling of ease and pleasure. It is based on the assumption that humans tend to find visual images that reflect their own preferences/wishes in life more pleasing and attractive.

The “rule of odds” suggests that an odd number of subjects in an image is more interesting than an even number. Thus if you have more than one subject in your picture, the suggestion is to choose an arrangement with at least three subjects. An even number of subjects produces symmetries in the image, which can appear less natural for a naturalistic, informal composition.
An image of a person surrounded/framed by two other persons, for instance, where the person in the center is the object of interest in that image/artwork, is more likely to be perceived as friendly and comforting by the viewer, than an image of a single person with no significant surroundings.”
Do you see the Rule of Odds in this card? I took a single rhinestone and surrounded it with an even number of images from the Mosaic Madness stamp set. My color combo was taken from the Color Coach. It is an easy pattern to use with this set; with endless possibilities.
